Another Season comes to a close
At Lough Slug. We want to try and catch a few Brown Trout, before the season is over.
For me it is always a bit sad to see the winter coming. There is melancholy in the air and the thought, that we have to wait until March for more trout fishing is almost sickening.
But we make the best of it and Ray has a few Brownies to take home.
This one will be my last one for the season 2008 and I'm looking forward to eating it tomorrow.
Good beye to Lough Slug. See you next year.
Ray Robinson in England
Ray Robinson on a little holiday in England. Duncton Hill, Sussex, to be more precise.
There is a trout fishery consisting of a series of chalk lakes.
Ray's friend Mr. Richard Moon shows what these trout want and gives a demonstration.
Obviously a frightfully civilised fishery. You don't even need wellies.
Richard has him in the net.
But Ray catches one on the Bibio. These trout, by the way are no Rainbows; they are Lough Leven Brownies.
Fishing the Eany
Jodie O'Neill is into a fish at the Devlins. There were many Salmon jumping and moving, but only a ver few were caught that day.
Allistair Proctor has him safe in the net.
Jodie and his Eany Salmon.
Plenty of Salmon in the Owenea
Perfect conditions in the Owenea. We see plenty of Salmon, a good flood going, but we can't catch a fish.
Otmar Butz giving his damndest to catch a fish, but it was not meant to be.
Off the Maas Road
There are a good few lakes along the Maas road near Ardara, Co. Donegal.
This one has not many, but pretty good Brown Trout. Ray prooves that beyond a doubt.
Another one on the Bibio.
The day's loot.
Salmon from the Owenea
Great water in the Owenea. Ray and me fishing the lower reaches of this splendid Donegal River.
Ray has one just above the "Little Footbridge".
Not a very big one, but it produces a smile nevertheless.
Mine is not much bigger, but at least we have a wee fish to eat.
At the Owenea towards Ardara.
Ray and Otmar and Me up at Glencolumbcille
Ray tells Otmar where all those lakes are; up at Glencolumbcille. Yonder that there hill.
It is a fair old walk to get up to the lakes, but you are always rewarded. Splendid views all around.
Can't believe my luck. I catch a good brownie on a Wickham's straight away.
And Ray soon has one on a Bibio.
Otmar Butz and Ray Robinson celebrating the day, the fishing and life in general.
Salmon run the Owenea
Monbrecia bloom: time for salmon. Today a good few came up the Owenea.
Otmar Butz is into one pretty soon, though they are not too keen on our flies.
Obviously a seal has attacked this one.
Otmar puts the fish back, but is happy nevertheless, because we see so many salmon.
Not just in the water. This one took the Shrimp Fly.
Heavy grey clouds are around us all day, only to lift a bit towards evening.
More Tales from the Owenea
The Owenea has water and looks perfect.
We can see a lot of fish but only this one takes the fly, the Masquerade.
The banks are pretty much overgrown and to land a fish here is not easy. Maybe the Fisheries Board gets the hint and does something about it. I'm talking about Beat 7.
Lough Skannive
We catch a few small brown trout in Lough Skannive, County Galway. A
farmer tells us, there are more lakes around here, some with big trout.
But to get there is not easy and mostly a long walk.
We'll come back. With more time.
